Kuba, Anfang der 80er Jahre. Carlos, genannt "Yuli", ist ein ungestümes, rebellisches Kind und der ungekrönte König spontaner Breakdance-Wettbewerbe Havannas. Sein Vater Pedro, LKW-Fahrer und Enkel einer Sklavin, erkennt das außergewöhnliche Talent seines Sohnes. Doch Yuli will nicht tanzen, er will Fußballer werden, wie Pelé. Pedro zwingt ihn auf die staatliche Ballettschule und sorgt mit harter Hand dafür, dass er seine Ausbildung beendet, zuletzt fernab der Familie. Yuli lernt, mit der Einsamkeit zu leben. Der Tanz wird vom Zwang zur Zuflucht und er entwickelt sich zum herausragenden Tänzer seiner Generation – Beginn einer einzigartigen Karriere. Im fernen London zehrt das Heimweh an Yuli, die Sehnsucht nach Familie, Freunden, nach Kuba. Als er nach einer schweren Verletzung mit dem Tanzen pausieren muss, geht er zurück nach Havanna.
