Fünf Jahre ist es her, dass eine Zombie-Apokalypse praktisch die ganze Menschheit ausgelöscht hat. Die seinerzeit angehend Ärztin Zoe war dabei, als Patient X in ihrem Institut für den Ausbruch sorgte. Seitdem lebt sie in einem militärischen Bunker, wo sie Forschungen betreibt, um die Epidemie doch noch in den Griff zu bekommen. Da man die Untersuchungen nicht ohne Versuche am „lebenden“ Objekt betreiben kann, dienen Untote vor den Toren der Basis als Versuchsobjekte. Als Zoe mit einem Einsatzteam Medikamente besorgen will, stoßen sie auf weitere Zombies. Einer von denen kann die Verfolgung aufnehmen und sich in die Basis einschleichen. Als er Zoe gegenüber steht, beißt er jedoch nicht zu. Die Ärztin erkennt, dass es sich um Max handelt. Sein Blut scheint eine hohe Konzentrationen von Immunität zu enthalten, dass er nicht zum völlig mutiert ist.
